let me try and see whether it is easier to put an announcement here than to send the e-mail around.

August 8 (Wednesday), 14:00, Olga Shevchuk from University of Amsterdam will give a talk in Gerrit's room

Transfer matrix as powerful tool to solve the gapless XXZ model

Abstract:

Bethe Ansatz is widely used to describe thermodynamic properties of certain one-dimensional quantum many-body models. One such model is the gapless spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg chain with periodic boundary conditions. In my talk I will start from some basic introduction to the Bethe Ansatz and proceed with numerical method of solving Bethe equations of this model which is based on exact diagonalization, transfer matrix, and polynomial-fitting. In the end, I will show you some of the results that was obtained by this method. The findings show that the transfer matrix is able to describe all eigenstates of the system.

 

Olga is a candidate for a PhD position. I may also ask a couple of you to talk briefly to her.

on Monday, after Alina's talk, we all went down to hear and Chris Drost's master presentation.
Chris has worked on quantum signatures of phonons in the coupling of a molecule to leads.
A substantial delegation of Chris' family was present. It is not (yet) clear what they picked up from
Chris' talk, but they were certainly happy to hear that Chris had completed the procedure, including a
thorough questioning, very successfully. So there is a new qualified theorist on the loose in Delft.

This is to remind you that we should leave the building today before 16:00 and unplug all electrical devices. Me and Yaroslav will start the check-up at 15:15, please be ready by this time !!!

Group meeting July 16

We have started group meetings of the second half of the year in a new, less formal location with the talk of Alina Hriscu. She told about her recent results in synchronization of Josephson and Bloch oscillation. She gave a nice general intro mentioning fireflies. The talk was unfolding prefectly, with interesting details and provoking questions. Unfortunately, there was time pressure owing to the master thesis presentation of Chris that was scheduled later today. So that the talk has become a bit sketchy in the end.
