Congratulations, PhD Alina Hriscu

Alina has finished our rough four-year long jeep ride and has obtained her title today. The defense was very good, and she has been complimented by every committee member, something that is rather exceptional.

Can somebody blog about the party? I'd really appreciate.

Congratulations, Yaroslav!

By decision of College van Bestuur of our university Yaroslav Blanter has been promoted to the rank of full professor, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hoogleraar . Well-deserved and long-awaited promotion. This decision, although irreversible, is not yet officially announced and will be implemented by steps, the last one will be an official speech of Yaroslav in about a year. So I sincerely hope we will celebrate the event several times :)

Giorgi's PhD defence

As many of us know Giorgi got his PhD degree on Monday, after a relatively painless one hour procedure. The committee members tried to do their best to embarrass him with the questions, but he managed to answer all of them in a satisfactory manner. It is said that the party was great success, running well over midnight, and that Akash succeeded in getting some staff members to dance, but I had to leave early and was only represented by the voice record. Giorgi will stay with us until the beginning of November, and then will start looking for a job in the Netherlands. Congratulations.

New PhD Student

My name is Olya. I've just started my PhD with Yaroslav this Monday. Originally, I am from Ukraine, Kiev, but my Bachelor I did in Taiwan, in not such a big city Hsinchu which is famous for its Science Park, one of the world's biggest semiconductor manufacturing. I'm living in the Netherlands already for 2 years since in August 2012 I got my Master's diploma in Theoretical Physics from University of Amsterdam. Project was about integrability and based on Bethe Ansatz for one-dimensional spin chain. Hopefully some time later the publication will come from it. Now, I am almost done with all administrative procedures here and reading some papers for the new project which will be about interaction of the mechanical resonator with the Josephson bifurcation amplifier.

In the time I am not doing Science, I like jogging, dancing and riding bike to different cities and places in the Netherlands of course if it is not raining. Sometimes, I would play table tennis or volleyball.

That's a little bit about myself and hope soon I will know you all better!

From Victor Boogers

Let me introduce myself

I'm a bachelor student of the fourth year and am doing my Final Bachelor Project with Jos Thijssen. I hope to start with the master Applied Physics (with the track Quantum Nanoscience) this year and one of the things I still need to do is this project. I hope to finish somewhere in the beginning of december.

Besides my study I also train a lot. I'm a sprinter (100m, 200m, 400m), but I have been injured for a long time around my pelvis, so I have never been able to get good results yet.
